What We Test For

IMG_9954Everyone’s DNA is unique. A number of families have DNA that contributes to problematic health issues. Our couples come to us because they want to do everything they can to conceive a healthy child. To that end, Genesis Genetics is known globally for its ability to test for some of the rarest genetic conditions, as well as more commonly known ones. Couples who are at risk for any serious inherited diseases (we do not test for trivial traits) can reduce health uncertainties to their offspring through the knowledge and experience of the Genesis Genetics staff.

In the UK only licensed conditions are applicable to PGD. A full list of the Human Fertility and Embryology Authority conditions can be found at HFEA Licensed PGD conditions. The list is of conditions not of specific genes since there may be a number of similar genes the can produce a single condition. The HFEA uses the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database to curate conditions OMIM.

All the approximately 230 conditions licensed by the HFEA have been successfully run by Genesis Genetics and are applicable to Karyomapping based PGD. If your condition is not on the HFEA list then a license has to be applied for. This has to be performed by your IVF centre and it usually done in conjunction with Genesis Genetics.

The application has to demonstrate the clinical case for approval and goes to a team of experts external to the HFEA for approval. This process can take up to 6 months. As well as PGD conditions, Genesis Genetics can also test for HLA tissue typing, in conjunction with a PGD condition test. As part of our PGD process we can also simultaneously test for PGS or Translocation carrier imbalances with PGD.

Sex selection of embryos is only legal in the UK for medical reasons. Typically this is for cases of sex linked PGD conditions.

A more complete list of the conditions that Genesis Genetics USA have previously tested is available here.

About Us

Genesis Genetics is the pioneer of preimplantation testing of embryos for inherited genetic abnormalities, and was founded by world renowned scientists largely responsible for discovering preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) as a clinical practice and performed the first successful cases in the world.
